Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Grigorivich Kabanoff was born in the Orlovsky province in Russia on August 14, 1877. He was christened in the Russian Orthodox faith. He was an officer in the Tzar's army; severely wounded during the February 8, 1904 – September 5, 1905 Russo-Japanese War. He was held in high regard for his military service and was awarded the following medals: the Order of Saint Anne 4th class with the inscription “for heroism,” the Order of Saint Stanislaus 3rd class with swords and bow, the Order of Saint Vladimir 4th class with swords and bow and the Order of Saint Anne 3rd class.

At the time of the Russian Revolution he was stationed at Vladivostok, not far from the Chinese border. He was executed by the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War as were many officers who remained loyal to the Tzar. His wife and young daughter were able to escape to China.
